Make sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administrator enabled.

Problem:

When you try to remotely administer a Windows Server Core box using Device Manager you receive the below error;

device_mgmt_core.png
“Unable to access the computer XXXX
Make sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the “Plug and Play” and “Remote registry” services.
The error was: Access is denied.”

Solution:

Firstly if you have not already open up the firewall on the Server Core to allow remote administration install using the below command;

netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“remote administration” new enable=yes

To be able to remotely administer a Server Core install using device manager you need to enable the local policy “Allow remote access to the Computer PnP interface” under Configuration => Administrative Templates => System => Device Installation.

To do this you will need to use the Group Policy Object Editor MMC snap-in on another 2008, 2008 R2, Vista or Windows 7 box to remotely connect to you Server Core installation.

Once the policy has been changed the Server Core installation will need to be restarted for the change to take effect.
